The Hagia Sophia was the largest and most admired cathedral in Christianity for almost a thousand years. The current structure was built between 532 and 537. The famous Virgin and Child mosaic in the apse was inaugurated in 867, the first to be installed after a prolonged period of iconoclasm (726-843) in the Eastern Church.

Chora Museum consists of five main parts: the annexes, the parakklesion, the inner & outer narthexes and the naos.
