This instrument is clear evidence of the links between the astrolabe and astrology. On one side is an astrolabe for a single latitude, and on the other an astrological volvelle, used to find the positions of planets and other celestial bodies, especially in relation to the traditional astrological houses.

Laysan Rail (1944): The Laysan Rail was a small flightless bird of the Northwest Hawaiian Island of Laysan. It was only 5.9 inches from beaktip to "tail" tip. The rail was initially threatened when domestic rabbits were introduced to Laysan. With no predators to control their numbers the rabbits soon ate the entire vegetation cover on the island. The species is believed to have become extinct on Laysan during 1923. The last rail was seen on Eastern Island in Midway in June 1944.
