To me, the history of the Khmer Empire is a pretty interesting one. The early years of the empire was dominated by Hinduism which Angkor Wat was first dedicated to. The Khmer Empire is one of the earliest ancient kingdoms in South East Asia, with influences from India and China, hence the worship of Hindu gods. With their rise, they built one of the most enduring image of the ancient culture that we continue to reflect upon today.

Located east of Angkor Thom (and not within Angkor Thom itself), the temple is incredibly popular due to the attention it received from the movie. Therefore, its best to plan your trip there earlier during the day or much later when crowd thins. Whatever you choose, don’t miss this temple. It’s incredibly beautiful and offers plenty of amazing Instagram opportunities!

This structure at Ta Prohm is special. Inside, sound is amplified and echoed throughout. The locals believed that if you step inside here, make a wish or prayer and thump your chest, the beating sound that resonates throughout the entire structure will bring good luck to you, and therefore granting your wish.

The decline of the Khmer Empire coincided with the rise of Ayutthaya Kingdom or Siam which destroyed Angkor. This is interesting to me nevertheless because of where I am from. The fall of Khmer gave rise to Ayutthaya Kingdom which include servitude of city-states in the Malay Peninsula such as Kedah and Penang, around the time of the Malacca Sultanate’s rise to power. Both become foes in the straits of Malacca jostling for power.
