Atypical lymphocytes - virally activated lymphs. Actually, I think the designation of atypical lymphocyte should be retired. These cells are not atypical. They are reacting to antigen in a very typical way for a lymph! Also, the term rings the infectious mono bell for the docs. I think "activated lymph" is more accurate and refers to viral infection in general, rather than mono in particular.
