This Consolidated B-24 Liberator of the U.S. Army 15th AF was mortally struck by a German Bf 109 during a mission over the synthetic oil refineires at Vienna, Austria. Flames are seen bursting out behind the wings and sweeping back toward the tail. The Liberator exploded before for its final plunge. One crew member managed to bail out safely before her loss. Note the crew member coming out of escape hatch.
