Castle Penela (Portuguese: Castelo de Penela)|is situated within a Penela town in Penela Municipality in Coimbra District, Portugal. The castle had been constructed on a hill dominating the region and was previously a stronghold safeguarding Coimbra in times of the Reconquista. Castle of Penela as well as the neighboring castle Montemor-o-Velho are both equally great examples of defensive structures of that period of time.
