First, a word about the Brothers Quay, who are filmmakers. They are interested in Polish and Czech stuff. They are interested in the surrea.

As a collector of naive art--particularly produced with letters or numbers--and as a person generally interested in naive and outsider (and art brut and letterist and found )art, I was astonished to find this spectacular work by Terea Ottalo (ca. 1800-1870). First of all, I make this to be about 200 lines long, and about 50 inches tall. The words are, well, minute. Secondly: this magnificnet thing was EMBROIDERED. Breathtaking, really.

'In 1971, Nini Pirandello, wife of Twombly’s Roman gallerist Plinio De Martiis, died suddenly. 'Nini’s Paintings' were painted in tribute to her. In his 1915 text, ‘Mourning & Melancholia’, Sigmund Freud describes the act of mourning as a process that unfolds ‘bit by bit’; an obsessive and repetitive listing in an attempt to sever the bond between deceased & bereaved. This can only be done once the mourner has rerun memories of the lost loved one.'
