Jemison fulfilled a lifelong dream she held ever since she was a small girl in Chicago by becoming the first African-American woman to fly into space.  She graduated in 1977 with a dual degree in chemical engineering and African-American Studies,   Jemison later obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1981 from Cornell University and travelled to developing countries to provide primary care."
