Odoardo I (1612-1646) (Duke of Parma 1622-1646) His reign marked the decline of both Parma & the Farnese, as Italy became caught in the greater wars between France & Spain while the family came under attack from the rival Barberini papal family. Similar to Tuscany & the Medici, these wars, a plague in 1630 & shifting economic patterns left Parma impoverished & the Farnese deeply in debt, from which neither ever fully recovered.
