Pedro Nunes (Alcacer do Sal, 1502 - Coimbra, August 1578), was a Portuguese mathematician considered one of the greatest scientific figures of his time. Contributed decisively to the development of sailing theory, having been dedicated, among others, the mathematical problems of cartography. It was also the inventor of several measuring instruments, including the "ring nautical", the "shadow instrument", and the nonius.
