June 3, 2014 Source:Carnegie Institution Summary: June 3, 2014 Source: Carnegie Institution Summary: Astronomers have discovered two new planets orbiting a very old star that is near to our own sun. One of these planets orbits the star at the right distance to allow liquid water to exist on its surface, a key ingredient to support life.

Kapteyn’s star — a nearby star that likely formed outside this galaxy — hosts two exoplanets more than twice as old as Earth.

astronomers cite GK Persei as an example of a “classical nova,” an outburst produced by a thermonuclear explosion on the surface of a white dwarf star, the dense remnant of a Sun-like star.
