The First Minnesota by Don Troiani Part of the Union II Corps defending Cemetery Ridge from Confederate assault, the 1st Minnesota charges with fixed bayonets during the second day of Gettysburg. Taking grievous casualties, their action nevertheless bought vital time for the rest of the Corps to reform and reinforce their lines and stave off the Confederate onslaught.

"The Angel of Marye's Heights" Sgt Richard Kirkland - Company G, South Carolina Infantry gained fame for his act of compassion during Battle of Fredericksburg. Kirkland, hearing the cries of wounded Union soldiers, gathered canteens from his fellow Confederates and left the protection of a stone wall to give a little comfort to his wounded enemies. It was one of the most remarkable acts of the entire war. Sadly, Kirkland was killed September 20, 1863 during the Battle of Chickamauga.

"The Gross Clinic," 1875 ~ One of Thomas Eakins' most well-known artworks, "The Gross Clinic," was created in 1876 and represented the artist's ongoing curiosity with surgical procedures and dissection. The painting shows a Philadelphian surgeon, Dr. Samuel Gross, supervising an operation on a patient's leg. Eakins spent nearly a year working on the scene, and the end result amounted to one of the artist's largest paintings ever produced.
