This diadem was originally commissioned for the Queen consort of Portugal D. Maria Pia, wife of King Luis I of Portugal. This tiara was made in Lisbon by Royal Jeweller Stephen Sousa. The tiara is composed of diamond stars, based on a frame, which makes the stars are sensitive to motion. The largest diamond tiara is a pink diamond known as the Diamond of Maria Pia. At the same time was commissioned a necklace, known as the Necklace of Stars, to make together with the diadem.
