Carmen Miranda

On her birthday, we celebrate the life of the late Carmen Miranda, also known as "The Brazilian Bombshell" and the original "Chiquita Banana Girl.

While Miranda's popularity in the U.S. continued to rise, she began to lose favor with some Brazilians. In 1940, she returned to Brazil where she was welcomed by cheering fans, but the press began criticizing Miranda for giving in to American commercialism & projecting a negative image of Brazil. When she played at a charity concert, she was met with boo's & silence. The incident deeply hurt Miranda & she did not return to Brazil again for 14 years.
