DeGrazia built the Mission in the Sun in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe calling the mission his most durable and important piece of art. “The mission will have no functional purpose. It will be a place of beauty where I can go and hide.” Happy Throwback Thursday! #NationalHistoricDistrict #DeGrazia #Artist #Ettore #Ted #GalleryInTheSun #Adobe #Architecture #Tucson #Arizona #AZ #Catalinas #Desert #MissionInTheSun #Murals #Guadalupe #PadreKino #Frescoes #Throwback #Thursday #TBT

DeGrazia believed that murals were a great way to reach audiences. As public art, murals not only serve the artist, but also enhance and inform the world of both beauty and social ills.

In the early 1950’s artist Ted DeGrazia built a small adobe chapel in the foothills of Tucson’s Catalina Mountains. “It’s in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is the first Virgin of the American Continent… She is a dark Madonna, like the Indians. The Indians love her. Everybody who hears about her loves her and so do I. And so I built this little Mission for myself… It’s not Catholic it’s just a little chapel for anybody who wants to go in there…” - Ted DeGrazia
