"Portrait of Tieleman Roosterman" by Frans Hals. In the collection of The Cleveland (OH) Museum of Art. Tieleman Roosterman's business in fine linen and silk fabrics extended as far as France. Given his trade, it is no surprise that Hals emphasized the costume here- luxurious despite its somber color. The inscription at the upper right, painted by Hals, gives the sitter's age as 36 and the painting's date.

1632 "Portrait of a Gentleman" by Cornelius Johnson (1635-1640) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC - From the curators' comments: "[The] sitter’s long hair, lace collar, and elaborate sleeves mark him as a cavalier, a supporter of the king in the civil war that eventually drove Cornelius Johnson to Holland. When the portrait was painted, Johnson was still in England, where he held the distinction of “his Majesty’s servant in the quality of Picture drawer.”"
