Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and Major Mitchell's Cockatoo deep in conversation.

BEARDED VULTURE - Switzerland. In the 19th century, the Bearded Vulture had a bad press. It was accused of carrying off and devouring lambs and even small children. Alpine authorities declared open season on the bird and the last one was shot in 1913. But the vulture, which is capable of digesting large bones, is back thanks to a successful and costly 20-year program of introducing bred birds into the wild.

A bearded vulture (biggest bird of prey that you can meet in Switzerland), taken against the bright gray sky.

Today's bird breed of the day is the Sulphur-crested cockatoo. These birds are common pets. They are very social and love to be around people or other birds. The can be VERY noisy birds so if noise is a problem a cockatoo wouldn't be recommend for your family. There are different types of cockatoos.

Kakapo - One of the rarest birds of all is New Zealand's kakapo parrot. Only 124 animals remain in the wild—the species has been largely wiped out by introduced predatory mammals such as feral cats.

This chubby little bird is called the Kakapo-the worlds only flightless parrot. There is a great you tube video with Stephen Fry, a naturalist and an encounter with a kakapo.
