King Manuel II of Portugal ascended the throne on Feb.1, 1908, following the assassination of his father, Carlos I, and his brother, Crown Prince Luis Filipe. He was voted out of office by the government of Spain in 1910 and spent the rest of his life in exile. Manuel married royally, his cousin Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern. Their marriage lasted nearly 20 years as he died at the relatively young age of 42. There were no children from this royal union.
