Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the citys cathedral, as destination of the Way of St. James, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in the 9th century. Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in North-western Spain. Tradition says that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried here. The way of Saint James has existed for over a thousand years. It was one of the the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times together with Rome and Jerusalem.
