The glowing object in this Space Telescope image is an elliptical called NGC It is located over 90 million light-years away in the constellation of NGC 3923 is an example of a shell galaxy where the stars in its halo are arranged in layers.

NGC 7814 is also known as the “Little Sombrero.” It and its apparently-larger namesake, the Sombrero, are stunning edge-on galaxies.

Click to Enlarge This new NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows ghostly green filaments, lying within the galaxy Teacup (also known as 2MASX J14302986+1339117). This filament was illuminated by a blast of radiation from a quasar — a very luminous and compact region that surrounds the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy. Its bright green hue is a result of ionized oxygen, which glows brightly at green wavelengths.

The University of Alabama, who initiated the Hubble survey, say these ethereal wisps were illuminated by a blast of radiation from a supermassive black hole at the core of the host galaxy.

The galaxy IC 335 is part of a galaxy group containing three other galaxies, and located in the Fornax Galaxy Cluster 60 million light-years away. As seen in this image, the disk of IC 335 appears edge-on from the vantage point of Earth. This makes it harder for astronomers to classify it, as most of the characteristics of a galaxy’s morphology — the arms of a spiral or the bar across the center — are only visible on its face. Still, the 45 000 light-year-long galaxy .
