Philae Lander on

This picture released by the European Space Agency ESA was taken by the ROLIS instrument on Rosetta’s Philae lander during its descent from a distance of approximately 3 km from comet.

A giant planet similar to Uranus or Neptune may orbit the sun in the solar system's outer reaches. "Planet Nine" is shown here in an artist's impression that includes hypothetical lightning on the planet's surface. The bright star to the right is the sun.

'Planet Nine' May Exist: New Evidence for Another World in Our Solar System

The massive planet could take over years to orbit the sun. Astronomers call it Planet Nine - a Massive Perturber out beyond Pluto.

Astronomers Capture Birth of Tatooine-Like Solar System for the First Time

Astronomers have captured close-up images of the birth of a multiple-star solar system for the first time. Although its creation is still underway, it.

Supermoon This Saturday, Next One Is a Super 'Blood Moon' on Sept 28th

Tomorrow, a full moon will occur that appears slightly larger and brighter than usual. The reason is that the Moon's fully illuminated phase occurs within a short time from perigee - when the Moon is its closest to the Earth in its elliptical orbit.

The sun emits a mid-level solar flare which erupted on the left side of the sun on August 24, 2014. The sun's solar wind, which sometimes collides with the moon contains helium-3, a gas that could help solve Earth's energy problems. Image by NASA/Reuters

8 things you didn’t know about the moon

On Aug. the sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at a. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured images of the flare, which erupted on the left side of the sun. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation.

The Cartwheel Galaxy is the result of two galaxies that collided about 700 million years ago. The outside ring is comprised of hot blue stars, formed from waves of density moving outwards following the collision. It's a bit larger than the Milky Way, and is located in the constellation Sculptor. It's about 500 million light years distant, or nearly 3 sextillion miles.

"The Cartwheel Galaxy" - Located 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor, the galaxy looks like a wagon wheel, an unusual configuration created by a nearly head-on collision with a smaller galaxy about 200 million years ago.

Dwarf Galaxy DDO 68 (UGC 5340) - This new image from the Hubble Space Telescope has data that indicates DDO 68 - about 39 million light-years away - is a newly formed galaxy in our cosmic neighborhood. However, without more detailed modelling, astronomers cannot be sure and they think it may be older than the current data indicates
