I have been looking for some time for a Quail to 'pose' for me in good light. This morning I found a covey of Quail feeding on the ground in Montana de Oro and I took some shots, but it is hard to get a clear shot of Quail in grass. I knew there is usually a lookout male close by ready to sound the alert in case of danger. As I watched this male flew up into a tree. Yes! I was able to take a number of shots before he moved on.

Well, not a chicken, but a valuable part of the flock, she could be! Helmeted Guinea-fowl (Numida meleagris): Lives on the savannah and in the bush eating insects and seeds. They enjoy eating ticks and that possibly reduces the spread of lyme disease.
Peacock - the male displaying his gorgeous tail feathers!
This is a really cool photo because you can see ALL the different types of peacock feathers (eye feathers, "T" feathers at the bottom, sword feathers down the sides, mottled feathers on body, corona feathers on head)...yes, I'm a dork and know all the different types, but if you've read this whole thing, you do too!
