Dieter Rams’s ten principles for good design (sometimes referred to as the ‘Ten commandments’).

Isamu Noguchi once said: "Everything is sculpture, any material, any idea without hindrance born into space, I consider sculpture." Nowhere is this more apparent than in his Noguchi Coffee Table, which takes the idea of a table, breaks it down into its barest components, and then re-imagines and re-energizes it.

Modern Classics: The Arco Lamp

As I stated in my dream living room post, the Arco lamp is one of those classic modern pieces that I’ve longed for since I was young. The hefty Carrara marble base and long sweeping stainless steel neck make for quite the statement piece, yet the lamp seems to fit so well in just about any room. The Arco lamp, designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and produced for Flos, was supposedly modeled after a street lamp design.

Quick History: The Arco Lamp

The Arco lamp is one of those classic designs where form and function meet and live happily ever after. Designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, it is so practical as to seem almost obvious — how else would you turn a floor lamp into an overhead light? — but the Castiglionis’ interest in ready-mades and functionalism makes this design complex in its simplicity.

Vincent Black Lightning, 1952 - this was the super-bike of its day and, at the time, the fastest production bike in the world. Also famous for being the muse for Richard Thompson's song of the same name.

Saul Bass film titles. Before Bass, film titles were static. Bass introduced a new kind of kinetic typography that allowed for motion in title sequences.

JVC GR-C1: the first home video camera that had the recording mechanism and camera in one unit. Before this time the user would carry a deck on a shoulder strap and the camera in their hands. The JVC GR-C1 set the form factor for camera for years to come. It is also know among movie geeks as the camera Marty uses in the first Back to the Future movie.

With a name like Tim Leatherman wasn't he destined to make this tool? There have been many 'improvements' since the original model but the original is still the best looking and useful.
