Closely connected to the prominent families of Virginia, she was the daughter of George Washington Parke Custis, George Washington's step grandson and adopted son. She grew up in the Custis estate, Arlington House, which is now the National Cemetery. She was small of stature and vivacious; unfortunately she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis later in life.
