My very, very favorite kind of bread to pair with cheese is one that’s studded with dried fruit and nuts. There’s something about the sweet-savory combination of elements in a loaf of this variety that’s versatile enough to match any type of cheese. And match it well, to boot. But so often, a good fruit and nut bread is either hard to find, or just not that great. So I figured it was about time to start making my own.
This old-fashioned favourite is proof that you don’t need to invent new recipes in order to eat healthily. Despite being very low in fat it has a lovely light, moist texture, thanks to the dried dates, and makes a pleasant alternative to a conventional fruited cake. It’s delightfully easy to make, and keeps well too.
This dark, firm-textured bread has a hearty character. Enjoy it for breakfast or with coffee or tea, thinly sliced and topped with cream cheese and a scattering of chopped dates. It keeps well for several days.
This Low Fat Date Loaf is my beautiful Mum's recipe. I quite often will have a slab for breakfast in the morning (with loads of butter!). I had forgotten how totally mouth watering it is! Give it a try!
