Dinoflagellates reproduce through cell division and due to their shells the offspring become smaller and smaller until they are forced to sexually reproduce.

Dinoflagellates are formed by cell division, they are then released among the ocean and float for a long period of time, when their life is coming to an end they form a thick wall made of dormant cells called cyst where they then fall into the ground.
