Alek Wek. Her presence had a huge impact on the perception of beauty in the fashion model industry. She is from the Dinka ethnic group in South Sudan, but in 1991 she and some family members fled to Britain to escape the civil war in Sudan. She later moved to the United States. "Portrait of a black woman" - Alberto Henschel - 1870 - Far more enslaved Africans were taken to Brazil than to North America, and slavery remained legal in Brazil until 1888. Henschel left many striking portraits of African-Brazilian people, most of them enslaved.
