In the context of the reconstruction of Lisbon's down town, after the great earthquake of 1755, appeared the idea of building a triumphal arch as a gateway to the city rebuilt . The construction of the Arch of Augusta Street started in the 18th century and suffered several stops. It was completed about 100 years after it's start, in 1875 .
