Author: Rilke, Rainer MariaBinding: Kindle EditionFormat: Kindle eBookNumber Of Pages: 133Release Date: 22-12-2011Details: Influenced by the masters of Antiquity, the genius of Michelangelo and Baroque sculpture, particularly of Bernini, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is one of the most renowned artists in history. Though Rodin is considered a founder of modern sculpture, he did not set out to critique past classical traditions. His most original works departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, and embraced the human body, celebrating individualism and physicality. This sculpture is based on a love story reported by Dante in his Divine Comedy and sculptured by Rodin for The Gates of Hell. Francesca's father arranged for her to be married to Gianciotto in a political union to end a war between Malatesta and Rimini. Gianciotto's younger brother, Paolo, was sent to advise Francesca. Upon meeting, they fell in love. Tricked into marriage with Gianciotto, Francesca pursued Paolo until one day they were found in her room. Gianciotto thrust a rapier towards Paolo, but struck both Francesca in her bosom and Paolo. The lovers both and were buried together in a tomb. Their love has frequently been illustrated by artists, as Rodin captures the tenderness of their eternal kiss. Total Dimensions: Height 18'' x Width 9'' Approximate Weight: 17 LBS Original Reproduction: Reproduction This is a bronze replica of Auguste Rodin`s `Adam` sculpture. In 1880, Rodin proposed to Turquet, the Undersecretary for Fine Arts, to flank his `Gates of Hell` by two colossal statues: Adam and Eve, the first sinners. The Gates of Hell is a monumental sculptural group that depicts a scene from "The Inferno", the first section of Dante Alighieri`s Divine Comedy written in the early 14th century. He had visited the two most famous versions of this subject: Masaccio`s `Adam and Eve` in Santa Maria Novella, Florence, and the Sistine Chapel in Rome with Michelangelo`s frescos , featuring Adam reaching his hand out to God as the central scene. But being dissatisfied with his first outline of `Adam`, because he thought it too close to Michelangelo`s style, he destroyed this first version. Rodin made Adam look down instead of facing his Father-Creator. We understand this downward look as an expression of shame and guilt expressing the shame and remorse after the Fall to sin. He is posed in a contrapposto but unnatural pose as though the feeling of remorse writhes his body. He was captures using the age-old method of lost wax casting and finished with brown patina stain. Adam is mounted upon a yellow-onyx marble base with the artist Rodin`s signature.
