Considered the nationality’s poet through the modern epic poem “Os Lusíadas”, Luís de Camões (1525-1580) had a troubled existence, seeing no recognition of his work in his lifetime. Endowed with a rich, complex, paradoxical personality, Camões was a humanist and thinker concerned with understanding the fate of his homeland. His work reveals this lucid and so proud consciousness that make up his genius as a poet and his superiority as a man. He is the great poet of the Portuguese mannerism.

Luís Vaz de Camões, - - Poeta His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama but is best remembered for his epic work "Os Lusíadas"
