Louis Armstrong. August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971) nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.    Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance.

The wonderful Louis Armstrong was born today 8-4 in 1901. His inventive trumpet playing, scat singing, duos with so many of the famous singers through his years have left us with a rich arsenal of great 'Satchmo' songs. His charismatic stage presence was like no other - he was a unique gift to American music. He passed away in 1971 and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
