Through his Irish grandmother, he was related to Thomas Ashe, who died on hunger strike after taking part in the Easter Rising soon after Peck's birth. President Lyndon Johnson intended to offer Peck the US Ambassadorship to Ireland, but he didn't run for re-election. He gave him the Medal of Freedom instead!
