Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch evangelical, was arrested and sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp in 1944 for hiding Jews. After the war, she encountered one of the cruelest former camp guards. She said of that moment, "For a long moment we grasped each other's hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God's love so intensely as I did then."

I heard Corrie Ten Boom lecture when I was in high school. She told the story of this poem so eloquently that we sat in complete silence listening to her.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and to discover that the prisoner was you."

Forgiveness is not always easy, but it is freeing! I like to remind myself of this to help me become pre-disposed to forgive.
