Hill of Crosses 2

The Hill of Crosses is a site of pilgrimage near Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The site was bulldozed three times by the Russians but despite this, the numbers of crosses ballooned. Today's estimates: 50,000.

"Wanderer, your footsteps are the road, and nothing more; wanderer, there is no road, the road is made by walking. By walking one makes the road, and upon glancing behind one sees the path that never will be trod again. Wanderer, there is no road--Only wakes upon the sea." - The Spanish poet, Antonio Machado, from "Proverbios y catares" in Campos de Castilla, 1912.
