Fantastic Utamaro scene of two beauties watching a revolving lantern optical toy. A silhouette of a geisha playing a shamisen and a dancing cat wearing tall geta sandals and carrying an umbrella appear on the side of the paper shade. To the left of the silhouettes, a man looks through the barred windows of a teahouse, holding a fan to his face. The Beauty Ohisa by Utamaro
Today I went to an EXCELLENT exhibition at the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown located in Roppongi. The exhibition was on Edo period publisher extraordinaire Tsutaya Jūzaburo. The picture above is of a ukiyo-e wood block print by the famous artist Utamaro, whose work was published exclusively by Tsutaya. This print is one of my favorites by Utamaro.
