Valerie Krokosky | Modern Quilting on Instagram: "Let’s talk about the “finished size” of 8 at a time half square triangles! Before you start cutting, the “finished size” is the size that your HST will be once it is sewn into your quilt top. Before it’s sewn in, it will be half an inch bigger, that’s because you’ll lose 1/4 inch on both sides due to the seam allowance. The formula is: (X + 7/8)x2 Where X is the “finished size” of the HST. So, if you want to make a 5 inch finished HST, you should begin with two 11.75 inch squares and know that the HST’s will be 5.5 inches before you sew them into your quilt top! I hope this helps! 😊 #quiltmath #quiltingtutorial #howtosew #quilting #HSTquilt #sewing #quiltkit #fatquarterquilt #learntosew #butfirstcoffee #sparkjoy #create" Quilt Top, Quilt Batting, Quilting Projects

Valerie Krokosky | Modern Quilting on Instagram: "Four at a time flying geese! Flying geese are such a classic block and thought to represent hope. Do you ever read about this history of quilt blocks? There are many variations on how to make flying geese, some of which size up the measurements to allow for trimming. This method is a “no waste” method that doesn’t require trimming, but you can always add 1/4 inch to your dimensions and then trim your flying geese. I’ve included a size chart at the end that includes the formula so you can make any size flying geese. Remember that the “finished size” is how big it will be once the block is sewn into your quilt top. Due to the seam allowance, this is 1/2 inch smaller than the block will be before it’s in your quilt top. #flyinggeese #how Instagram, Ideas, Quilt Block Tutorial, Quilt

Christina | Kindred Quilt Co on Instagram: "Have you ever made 4-at-a-time flying geese and found these little flaps of fabric in the corners of your flying geese blocks? Watch and read below to learn more! If this has ever happened to you, all it means is your smaller square units are just a little too big. This can happen for a lot of reasons. *Technically* 4-at-a-time flying geese units should be cut to 1/8" increments. But that can be really difficult and inaccessible for some people to cut Reading, People, Flying Geese Quilt, Quilting Tips
