Its policy envisaged the perpetuation of Portugal as a pluricontinental nation under the doctrine of lusotropicalism, with Angola, Mozambique, and other Portuguese territories as extensions of Portugal itself. Salazar's government and its secret police PIDE repressed civil liberties and political freedoms.
