Ben Kuroki, the only Japanese-American of the US Army to see air combat in the Pacific Theater (plus European) during World War II, flying a total of 58 combat missions during the war,  After Pearl Harbor, both Kuroki brothers denied enlistment but reapplied. By the end of the war, Kuroki had three Distinguished Flying Crosses. When asked about the prejudice that almost prevented him from service, Kuroki said: "I had to fight like hell for the right to fight for my own country." Tōyō Miyatake (1896–1979) was a Japanese American photographer, best known for his photographs documenting the Japanese American people and the Japanese American internment at Manzanar during WWII.Miyatake was born in Kagawa, Shikoku in Japan in 1896. In 1909 he migrated to the United States to join his father. He settled in the Little Tokyo section of Los Angeles, California.
