Gold stater of the Venetiabout 200-100 BC. Celtic. unknown | Northwestern Gaul, modern France | Royal Ontario Museum

Gold stater of the Venetiabout 200-100 BC. Celtic. unknown | Northwestern Gaul, modern France | Royal Ontario Museum

Numismatic hoard consisting of 92 golden staters of Philipp II, Alexander III, Philipp III Archidaeus, possibly Lysimachus, Seleucus I and Demetrius Poliorcetes. The hoard was found in the sanctuary of Artemis inside a clay unpainted aryter, covered with a sherd of a black-glazed skyphos. The presence of hoards inside sanctuaries is indicative of both the importance of coins as offerings to the gods and the function of sanctuaries as banks during the antiquity. Burial c. 3rd century B.C

Monedas griegas antiguas. Colección C.Gubelkian.Lisboa

The Lydian Stater was the official coin of the Lydian Empire, which was introduced before the kingdom fell to the Persian Empire. The earliest staters are believed to date to around the second half of the 7th century BCE, during the reign of King Alyattes (r. 619-560 BCE). According to a consensus of numismatic historians, the Lydian stater was the first coin officially issued by a government in world history and was the model for virtually all subsequent coinage. A Girl in Celtic Britain: Part II ~ Girl Museum

Earlier this month, I wrote about how a girl in Iron Age Britain would have celebrated the harvest time with a holiday called Samhain. What else do we know about what life may have been like for a girl in Iron Age Britain? Well, the Celts of Iron Age Britain, or Britons, were not really […]
